I hope your Saturday is lovely, {{first_name | friend}}. Somewhere in America, thereās an old iPhone sleeping in a junk drawer next to a mystery key, a pack of matches and three dead hotel pens. Let me tell you about this little storage rule for old devices ārestingā in a drawer like tiny retired robots.Ā
That spare iPad? The winter-only laptop? The old iPhone you swear youāll use again? Apple has a specific number it wants that battery sitting at before the drawer closes. Battery beauty sleep has rules. Of course it does.
š Whatās the battery percentage an old phone should be at before itās stored away long-term? A) 100%, obviously, we love preparedness, B) 0%, because batteries deserve naps, C) About 50% or D) Wherever it lands, who cares? Answerās tucked at the end, like that cable you canāt find. Iām guilty. I found three old phones in one drawer last month.
š¾ Terry bought Carbonite on a Tuesday. Her hard drive failed on Thursday: She recovered everything. Iāve used Carbonite for years because thatās how it works. Automatic, encrypted, off-site. Your backup shouldnāt sit next to the computer that could take it out. Get 50% off with my deal.*

TODAYāS DEEP DIVE
Bank on it

𤯠WOW! A power bank is a lithium battery you carry. Brand matters, and thereās one label check that matters more. Picks below.
š Read time: 2 minutes
āHi, Kim, I love your YouTube channel. You mentioned battery fires recently on a show. I want a portable battery I can trust for my phone, my iPad and my laptop. Iām afraid of a fire while it charges next to my bed, or worse, on a plane. Yike! Which brand is safest?ā ā Drama Rama Julie in Washington, D.C., listening on WTOP 103.5 FM
Julie, first, youāre not being dramatic. There have been 56 battery smoke-and-fire incidents on U.S. flights this year. The brand is half of it.
š·ļø The 10-second label check
Flip any power bank over.
The Wh number. Thatās watt-hours, the real size. Under 100 Wh flies without asking. If itās missing, back on the shelf.
A safety mark. UL 2056 is the standard written specifically for power banks. It tests overcharging, short circuits, drops, crushing and overheating. Look for the UL or ETL logo on the case itself. No mark, no sale.Ā
Then check the seller. On Amazon, the listing should say āShips from Amazonā and āSold byā the brand itself. That $9 brick from a seller named XQZTY is how a jump-starter ends up in a consumer safety warning with nobody to call.
š Why not just buy Appleās?
I get asked this a lot. Apple killed its MagSafe Battery Pack in 2023, and the only battery it sells today is a $99 pack that fits one phone, the iPhone Air. Nothing for an iPad, nothing for a MacBook.Ā
Apple would rather let Anker, Belkin and UGREEN fight over the battery. Those three publish their safety testing, put the UL mark on the case and answer the phone.
š Three Iād buy, any brand of phone
For your phone: Belkin 10,000mAh 20W. Works on any iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel or Motorola with a USB-C port. The cable is built in, so nobody forgets the cord. About $25, 37 Wh. Want the magnetic kind that snaps on the back? The Anker MagGo 10K (about $80) sticks to any iPhone 12 or newer and the Pixel 10. Samsung skipped the magnets. If thatās you, stick with the Belkin.
For your tablet: UGREEN Nexode 20,000mAh 145W. Built-in USB-C cable, 72 Wh, charges an iPad, a Galaxy Tab or a Surface, and has enough juice (100W) to run a small laptop in a pinch. Around $65 on sale.
For your laptop: Anker Prime 27,650mAh 250W. Two USB-C ports, 99.5 Wh, the biggest you can carry onto a plane without asking. About $180. Works with any laptop that charges over USB-C. (If your laptop still uses a round barrel plug, no power bank on Earth will feed it. Buy the wall charger and call it a day.)
Now, your two fears.Ā
The nightstand: Charge on a hard surface, never under a pillow or on the comforter, and unplug it when it hits full.Ā
The plane: It rides in your carry-on, never checked, and you charge it in your lap or the seat pocket. Where you can see it is where you can stop it. If a bank ever puffs up, runs hot or takes a hard drop, it retires to the battery drop-off, not the trash.
I got angry when my phone battery died. My therapist suggested I find an outlet.

Your backup needs a backup
Keeping important files on an external drive isnāt enough. Think about it. That drive can fail, get lost or be damaged right along with your computer. Thatās why I trust Carbonite. It automatically backs up your important files and photos in the cloud, where theyāre encrypted and protected from the unexpected.
Terry learned just how important that can be:
āYears ago, Kim recommended Carbonite, and I decided to purchase it to back up everything. Two days later, my hard drive failed. I downloaded my backup and recovered everything. Thanks Kim!ā ā Terry
Youāre welcome, Terry. Thatās exactly why I use Carbonite.
Your backup shouldnāt be sitting next to your computer where the same accident can take out both devices. Carbonite Basic gives you unlimited cloud backup for one computer. And right now, save 50% on Carbonite. Only $47.99 for your first year.Ā Thatās nothing for all your years of memories, documents, tax returns and more.
ā Sign up for Carbonite today and get 50% off. Youāll be glad you did. ā

š§ This weekend on my show
A computer labeled Robert Dillon a 93% match with a suspect in a crime 300 miles from his home. Heād never been there. He spent a night in jail anyway. Now heās suing. Hereās what I want to know: How much should we trust AI when itās deciding things about real people?
Plus, Meghan Markle joined her kidsā school group chat as āM.ā Her number was out within hours.
Also on the show:
Meta is being sued. Workers training its AI were allegedly shown intimate footage never meant for their eyes.
AI agents went rogue. Gemini and OpenAI tools broke into three companiesā health databases on their own.
Alison got burned by a fake Airbnb. Rusty nails and a āroomā that was a shed. Hereās how to spot the scam before you book.
Fat Bear Week is on. Last yearās 1,200-pound champ, Chunk, is defending his crown with a jaw he broke last summer. Voting ends Tuesday.

WEB WATERCOOLER
š¤ Chatbot, meet evidence locker: Hereās your reminder that ChatGPT is not a lawyer, a priest or a vault. Court records show a vandalism suspect asked the AI for ādamage controlā tips right after the damage was done. Prosecutors got the chat logs, and now his cleanup plan is evidence. What you type into an AI can end up in a courtroom. My rule: If you wouldnāt say it to a detective, donāt type it to a chatbot.
Bot and paid for: Your Amazon side hustle just hired a night shift that never sleeps. Amazon opened its seller tools to outside AI agents, starting with Anthropicās Claude. It can update listings and manage inventory while a one-person shop owner does something reckless, like sleep.Ā If you sell on Amazon, this is worth a look. Finally, an employee who actually reads the manual. The catch? If the AI botches a price, description or stock count, your morning begins with lost sales and refunds.Ā
š A human picks up the phone when fraud hits: Thatās what sold me on Coveron. Not just alerts. A real restoration specialist who handles everything. Up to $2 million in identity theft coverage. I left LifeLock for this. Get 71% off, thatās $4.36 a month.*Ā
Sunglasses need boundaries: Get ready for a Thanksgiving where your nephew wears Ray-Bans that might be listening, filming or answering questions, and nobody knows which. Metaās Gen 3 glasses start at $449 with better battery life and another mic. The camera-free Ray-Ban Audio model gets rid of the feature making ordinary people inspect each otherās faces like airport security. More than 100 style combinations coming by year-end. Iād rather fumble for my phone than make dessert feel like surveillance training.
š³ Checkout gets pickpocketed: Picture typing in your card to buy a plane ticket, and an invisible script quietly makes itself a copy. That happened across at least 119 websites, including a major airline and a Fortune 500 hospitality company. Hackers used AI agents to install the skimmers for about $25 per target, stealing more than 600,000 cards since July. Iād always use a credit card, skip debit and enable instant purchase alerts. Fraud loves someone who doesnāt check their checking account.
DEVICE ADVICE
ā”ļø 3-second tech genius: Weird outlines around people on the TV? Try turning down Sharpness. A better picture comes from the screenās resolution and the quality of the stream. That slider canāt invent missing detail. On computer monitors, the neutral setting is often 50 out of 100 or 5 out of 10, depending on the model. There, everyone looks a little less like a sticker.
š The web guy is out. AI is in: I opened Hostinger, typed what I wanted and had a complete website in 35 minutes. No coding, no designer, no hassle. 30-day money-back guarantee. Plans start at $2.69 a month. Get 10% off if you sign up.*
Scrolling shouldnāt turn your stomach: Googleās car-sickness feature is coming to more Android phones. Bubbles move around the screenās edges when the car is in motion, helping your eyes and body agree on whatās happening. Look for it in Settings > Safety & Emergency > Motion Assist. FYI, youāll need Android 17 or later and updated Google Play services.
š Thereās the button I was looking for: iOS 27 adds a Paste shortcut right above the iPhone keyboard. Copy some text, a link or a photo, switch apps and tap a place to type. The button appears, ready to drop it in. No pressing and holding for the usual menu. Small improvement, yes. But think how often you do this. š
Hear what all the fuss is about: Apple Maps is adding podcasts about famous landmarks. Look up the Statue of Liberty or Hollywood Sign, and you may see a Hidden Histories episode. Tap to listen, or browse Guides for more. For now, itās only a few places in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
š® All ideas, no coding? Thatāll do: Meta will soon let you make games by describing them. Think āMake a multiplayer 2D racing game.ā Itāll work on phones and browsers, and published games could appear in Facebook and Instagram feeds for people to play without downloading anything. Tell the kids to join the wait list. I expect a mention in the credits.

Frankie Lapenna climbed into a cage with a modified EngineAI T800 humanoid, a 6-foot, 165-pound metal kickboxer dressed like it wandered off a Terminator set. Under the hood, aviation-grade magnesium-aluminum alloy. Remote-controlled in real time, with preset button-triggered moves.
Its kicks can reportedly hit with about 850 pounds of force vs. roughly 650 for an average adult.
According to Cix Liv, CEO of REK (Robot Entertainment Kombat), Lapenna still won by unbalancing his opponent and ripping its head off. Classic move.Ā
You can see highlights here. So a robot might have lost its head. Iāve seen worse after a family group chat.
LOGGING OUT ā¦
š What you learned today: Power bank safety comes down to watt-hours and reliable certification, Amazon sellers can hand inventory chores to AI agents, Metaās new glasses keep the privacy debate alive, checkout skimmers are getting nastier and a robot kickboxer lost the old-fashioned way. Not bad for one email. Your ISP may know more than you think. Tomorrow, Iāll break down what they can see and the simple steps to lock things down.
ā Answer: C) About 50%. If youāre putting an iPhone, iPad or MacBook away for a while, Apple says charge it to around 50%, then power it off. Not full. Not empty. Right down the middle, like the Switzerland of battery percentages.
Two more drawer rules: Keep it cooler than 95 degrees (the garage in July wonāt qualify), and if itās sitting more than six months, top it back up to 50% at the six-month mark.
š© Why shouldnāt you wave a red flag at a battery? Because a battery charges.
